Overall Objective
The objective is to form words horizontally or vertically on the board, accumulating as many points as possible for each word.
Tile Placement
- First Word: The first word must be placed so that one tile is on the star in the center of the board.
- Subsequent Words: Every word after the first must share at least one tile with an existing word on the board.
- Tile Placement: Tiles can only be placed horizontally or vertically in one turn. You can form multiple new words by using neighboring letters.
- Illegal Words: Words cannot be placed if they form an illegal word with neighboring tiles.
- Swapping Tiles: A player may swap tiles from their rack with new ones from the Tile Bag during their turn. No word can be played on that turn.
- Passing Turns: A player can pass their turn, but no word can be played during that turn.
- Resigning: A player may resign at any time, but it counts as a loss.
- Blank Tiles: These act as wildcards, substituting for any letter but carry no point value.
Scoring
Letter Multipliers
- Double Letter (DL): Double the point value of any tile played on a DL space.
- Triple Letter (TL): Triple the point value of any tile played on a TL space.
Word Multipliers
- Double Word (DW): Double the point value of the entire word when a tile is placed on a DW space.
- Triple Word (TW): Triple the point value of the entire word when a tile is placed on a TW space.
- Multiple Words: You can form multiple words with one play. In such cases, score each word separately, including any bonuses, and add them together.
Bonus Points
You earn 35 bonus points when you use all 7 tiles in your rack in a single turn (a "Bingo").
End Game
The game ends when:
- A player uses all their tiles and there are no remaining tiles in the bag, or
- Three consecutive turns pass without scoring.
After the last tile is played, the opponent loses points equal to the sum of their remaining tiles, which is then added to the score of the player who placed the final tile.
Word List
Words With Friends uses custom word lists based on the Oxford English Dictionary and others depending on the language setting. Some guidelines for using words:
- Acceptable Words: All parts of speech (e.g., nouns, verbs, adjectives), including foreign, archaic, slang, and colloquial words.
- Not Acceptable: Proper nouns (capitalized words), abbreviations, prefixes, suffixes, hyphenated, or apostrophized words.
