How the Words With Friends Dictionary Differs from Scrabble
Unlike Scrabble, Words With Friends uses an open-source word list called the Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon (ENABLE) with around 173,000 words. While Scrabble dictionaries are officially maintained and updated, WWF’s list is less strictly curated, leading to some unique word differences.
WWF also automatically validates words in-game, but knowing its dictionary rules can still give you an edge. Here’s what’s excluded:
- Proper nouns (e.g., "Monday," "Nike"), unless they have a secondary meaning.
- Abbreviations & acronyms (e.g., "LOL," "USA"), unless widely recognized as words.
- Foreign words, unless commonly adopted into English (e.g., "sushi" is allowed, but "bonjour" is not).
- Some slang and controversial words, though, inconsistencies exist.
Understanding these rules can help you strategize better and avoid surprises during gameplay!
