NYT Crossplay – Quick Guide

What is Crossplay?

NYT Crossplay is a two-player word game, similar to Scrabble and Words with Friends but with some differences in board design, tile distribution, and point values. Players take turns building words on a shared board to score points.

How to Play

Each game uses a total of 100 letter tiles. At the start, each player receives 7 tiles, and played tiles are replaced by drawing from the shared tile bag until it is empty. The first word must cover the center spot, but unlike in Scrabble or Words with Friends, this doesn't double the word’s score. Points are awarded based on the rarity of letters and the placement of tiles on the board.

Players may pass to skip a turn or resign a game, which counts as a loss. When playing against the computer, you can cancel the game at any time. The game ends when the tile bag is empty, and both players have taken their final turn. Any tiles left in your rack at the end do not count against your score.

Crossplay uses the NASPA Word List 2023 dictionary, the official word list used in US and Canadian Scrabble tournaments.

Where to Play

Crossplay is available exclusively through the Crossplay app on iOS and Android devices. The app officially launched to the public on January 21, 2026, and is now available worldwide on the App Store and Google Play. Before launch, Crossplay was tested in New Zealand, followed by Australia and Canada. You can play against a computer without signing in, but creating or logging into a New York Times account allows you to:

  • Play across multiple devices
  • Track progress and stats
  • Challenge friends or other players
  • Matchmaking pairs you with opponents of similar skill who are online and opted into matchmaking. You can also play directly with friends by sending an invite link or adding them through your email contacts.

Tiles and Points: Crossplay features a unique tile distribution and point system. Some letters, like H, U, B, G, J, K, L, V, and W, have different values compared to Scrabble, while blanks, I, N, and S differ in quantity.

Building Words: Similar to Scrabble and Words With Friends, words must connect to existing tiles on the board, creating new opportunities for points.

Advanced Strategy: Effective play requires managing your rack, using high-value letters, creating multiple words at once, and taking advantage of board bonuses.

Computer Games: Matches against the computer do not affect stats and are not saved across devices.
