Rice-shaped pasta - NYT The Mini Clue

Across

  • The clue, "Something to look for while circling the block," involves wordplay and refers to the act of searching for a parking SPOT while driving around a block. This is a common activity when parking spaces are limited, making "SPOT" the fitting answer.

  • The answer "TIRE" fits the clue "Grow weary" because to "tire" means to become physically or mentally fatigued or exhausted. This directly aligns with the idea of growing weary over time, making it a synonym and the correct solution.

  • This is a math clue. The answer is at 6-Across, so the clue number is 6. A dozen is 12, which is 6 × 2.

  • The term "Rice-shaped pasta" describes a small, oval-shaped pasta that resembles grains of rice. ORZO, an Italian word meaning "barley" (due to its shape), is a commonly used pasta in soups, salads, and side dishes, perfectly fitting the clue's description.

  • The clue "December 25th, for short" refers to Christmas Day. "XMAS" is a commonly used abbreviation for Christmas, where "X" represents the Greek letter chi, the first letter of "Christ" in Greek. It's a shorter way to write Christmas, fitting the "for short" hint in the clue.

Down

  • "Calm before the ___" refers to the common phrase "calm before the storm," which describes a quiet or peaceful period that often precedes chaos or turmoil. The answer "STORM" completes the phrase, making it the logical and well-known solution.

  • The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are famously known for their love of pizza in their TV series, movies, and comics. It’s a staple of their character – often shown eating pizza in their sewer lair. This makes PIZZA the perfect answer to this clue.

  • The clue "Black-and-white cookies" refers to the iconic color pattern of OREOS, which have black chocolate wafers and white cream filling. This fits the description literally, and as a well-known snack, it's a common answer in crossword puzzles.

  • This clue is at 4-Down, so the clue number is 4. Doubling 4 gives 8, and adding 2 gives 10, which is the answer TEN.

  • The answer "DOX" fits because it is an informal term meaning to publicize private or personal information about someone, often online, without their consent. This matches the clue's requirement for "informally" and aligns with the precise definition of "release personal information."

Today’s NYT Mini Highlights

Today’s Thursday Mini by Joel Fagliano was one of those puzzles that flew by. The math gimmick was easy to spot right away, and once I noticed what was happening with the numbered clues, it actually made the puzzle even quicker to finish rather than slowing me down. I was done in just a few seconds. Most of the clues were very straightforward, with entries like PIZZA, STORM, XMAS, and OREOS filling themselves in. DOZEN and TEN tied into the theme nicely without feeling forced. The only answers that gave me even a brief pause were ORZO, if you don't immediately think of the rice-shaped pasta, and DOX, which is common internet slang but not a word everyone uses. Overall, this was a light, fun, and very accessible Mini.
