Giving evasive answers - NYT The Mini Clue

Across

  • The answer "STICK" fits because, in nature, sticks are commonly used to hold marshmallows for roasting over a fire. The wordplay here evokes the simple act of foraging a stick outdoors to serve as a make-shift skewer, aligning with "nature's" resourcefulness.

  • The answer is KENAN because Kenan Thompson is a comedian and actor who has been a cast member on "Saturday Night Live" (S.N.L.) since 2003, making him the longest-tenured cast member in the show's history. The blank refers to his first name, completing the clue.

  • The clue "My turn!" is in quotes, signaling a spoken phrase. "I'll go" is a natural response someone might say to indicate it's their turn to act, fitting perfectly as the solution. The contraction matches the tone of casual spoken language.

  • The answer "SLEET" fits the clue "Snow/rain combo" because sleet refers to a weather phenomenon where snow and rain mix, forming icy precipitation. It effectively combines aspects of both snow (frozen) and rain (liquid), making it the perfect solution for this literal description.

  • The answer is STY because a sty is the traditional and commonly known term for a pig's home. It's also associated with being messy or dirty, matching the clue’s description of a "Messy home for pigs." The word directly connects to both pigs and disarray.

Down

  • The clue refers to a challenging ski run classification, "double-black diamond," indicating expert-level slopes. "Tackles" suggests an action, and "perhaps" signals a pun. The activity associated with skiing double-black diamonds involves using SKIS, making this the fitting solution.

  • In poker, "tells" are subtle, often unconscious behaviors or changes in demeanor that reveal a player's hand or strategy—essentially their "giveaways." In this context, the term perfectly fits the clue, as these signals inform observant opponents about what a player might be holding.

  • The answer "INLET" is appropriate because an inlet is a narrow body of water that often connects to a larger body, resembling a small bay. Both terms describe smaller, enclosed water formations, making "INLET" a fitting synonym for "Small bay."

  • CAGEY means being cautious or guarded, often to avoid giving direct answers or revealing too much information. This aligns with "Giving evasive answers," as someone cagey would intentionally dodge questions or respond subtly to avoid full disclosure.

  • The solution is KNOT because both shoelaces and pretzels are commonly associated with this shape. A shoelace is tied into a knot to secure it, and the characteristic twist of a pretzel resembles a decorative knot. The clue links these two contexts through their shared shape.

Giving evasive answers Answer Explained

The answer is CAGEY.

The clue "Giving evasive answers" points to CAGEY, an adjective describing someone who is deliberately careful about what they reveal. A cagey person avoids giving direct answers, often because they don't want to share information or commit to a position. If you ask someone about their future plans and they keep responding with vague, noncommittal replies, you might describe them as being cagey. The word is commonly used in interviews, negotiations, and politics, where people sometimes sidestep questions instead of answering them outright. Recognizing that "evasive" suggests this kind of guarded behavior makes CAGEY a natural fit for the clue.

Today’s NYT Mini Highlights

This one took me a little longer than it probably should have. Most of the grid went in at a steady pace, but CAGEY slowed me down more than I expected, and ILLGO was the real sticking point. Looking at it now, "My turn" → "I'll go" feels completely obvious, but while solving, I kept thinking of other possibilities and couldn't land on it quickly. Once those finally clicked, the rest of the puzzle wrapped up without much trouble. I also liked the clue for STICK as "Nature's marshmallow holder." That was a fun one. Overall, an ordinary Sunday Mini that took me longer than I'd like to admit.
