Seriously injures - NYT The Mini Clue

Across

  • The answer "MUM" works as a solution because it has a double meaning. "Mum" means silent or quiet, and it is also short for chrysanthemum, a type of flower. This clever wordplay connects the two definitions perfectly.

  • MOMA, short for the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, houses Vincent van Gogh's iconic painting "The Starry Night." Known for its extensive modern art collection, MOMA is the renowned N.Y.C. institution where this masterpiece can be viewed.

  • The clue "Seriously? We're still doing this?" suggests an expression of frustration or disbelief about repetition. The answer "AGAIN" fits as it conveys the idea of something happening once more, typically with an annoyed or exasperated tone, aligning perfectly with the clue's sentiment.

  • The clue "Pyramid inhabitant" hints at inhabitants of ancient Egyptian pyramids. These structures, primarily tombs, housed the preserved bodies of the deceased, often in the form of mummies. Therefore, MUMMY is the correct answer, as it refers to the preserved remains often found in pyramids.

  • The term "A-list" refers to the most prominent, top-tier celebrities known for their high status and influence in entertainment or other industries. In the clue "Top-tier, as celebrities," the phrase directly points to these elite individuals, making ALIST the correct answer.

Down

  • The answer "MOGUL" refers to a wealthy and influential individual, often in business or media. The term is synonymous with someone who has amassed significant wealth and power, fitting the clue “Super-rich individual” perfectly. It emphasizes both their financial status and authority.

  • UMAMI is the fifth basic taste, alongside sweet, sour, salty, and bitter. It describes a savory, rich, and meaty flavor, commonly found in foods like kimchi and soy sauce, both of which are high in umami-rich compounds like glutamates. Hence, it perfectly matches the clue about savory flavor.

  • The word "MAIMS" means causing severe, lasting physical injury or disfigurement, aligning directly with the clue "Seriously injures." It is a precise synonym in this context, making it the correct solution.

  • "MAMA" is a common first word for babies because it is easy to pronounce with repeating syllables and is often reinforced by parents. The word represents a baby's early attempt to refer to their mother, making it a fitting and natural answer for this clue.

  • The New York Times (abbreviated as NYT) acquired The Athletic, a sports media company, in 2022. As the parent company, the abbreviation "NYT" fits the clue asking for the parent company of The Athletic. Its abbreviation matches the style indicated in the clue.

Seriously injures Answer Explained

The answer is MAIMS.

The clue "Seriously injures" points to maims, a verb meaning to wound someone so severely that they suffer permanent damage or the loss of normal use of part of the body. It's a stronger word than simply "hurts" or "injures," which is what makes the clue so precise. Maims isn't an everyday conversational word, so it can take a moment to come to mind, especially in a quick Mini puzzle. I found it to be one of the trickier entries today, but once a few crossing letters appeared, the answer fit perfectly and matched the clue's more serious sense of injury.

Today’s NYT Mini Highlights

Fun Monday Mini from Joel Fagliano! I couldn't help noticing how many M words were packed into the grid: MUM, MOMA, MUMMY, MOGUL, UMAMI, MAIMS, and MAMA. It gave the puzzle a neat little theme, even if it wasn't an official one. I also learned something new today. I only knew mum as "quiet," not as the flower. MAIMS was probably my trickiest entry, but everything crossed fairly. Always nice when a Mini sneaks in a new fact while still feeling smooth to solve.
