1-1, for one - NYT The Mini Clue

Across

  • The answer "GUN" is fitting because a starting pistol, commonly referred to as a "starter's gun," is traditional equipment used to signal the beginning of a race. This clue directly refers to this device as essential for starting races.

  • The clue "1-1, for one" refers to a tied score in a game or match. The numbers "1-1" indicate an equal point tally, and "for one" suggests this is an example of a score. Hence, the answer is SCORE.

  • The answer is TOAST because a "toast" is a traditional short speech made at weddings (or other celebrations) while holding a drink, usually to honor or celebrate someone. The phrase "made with a drink in hand" directly points to the act of raising a glass during a toast.

  • The answer is ATLAS because an atlas is a collection or book of maps. It serves as a geographic reference tool, often showing the world, countries, or regions. The clue is straightforward, as “Book of maps” is the exact purpose of an atlas.

  • The answer is "YES" because Brazil is the only country to have participated in every FIFA World Cup since its inception in 1930. This unique record makes "YES!" the correct and emphatic response to the question in the clue.

Down

  • The clue "World Cup highlights" refers to the most exciting or key moments in a World Cup match. In soccer, goals are the ultimate highlight as they determine the outcome of the game and are celebrated enthusiastically, making "GOALS" the fitting solution.

  • The answer "URSA" refers to "Ursa Major," a constellation in the night sky. "Ursa" is Latin for "bear," and Ursa Major translates to "Great Bear." It is one of the most recognizable constellations, including the famous Big Dipper asterism.

  • In soccer, each end of the pitch (field) has a goal, and these goals are equipped with nets. Nets are used to catch the ball when a team scores. The clue directly refers to these essential components of the soccer field.

  • The clue "Time at a hotel" implies the duration someone spends at a hotel. The word "STAY" perfectly describes this, as it refers to the period during which a guest resides at or visits a hotel. It succinctly answers the question of "time spent" in such a setting.

  • The clue references Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), an African nation known for its participation in the World Cup. The blank (___) is to be filled with "COTE," the French word for "coast," matching the country's French name, as French is Côte d'Ivoire's official language.

1-1, for one Answer Explained

The answer is SCORE.

This one got me for a second. When I saw “1–1,” I immediately thought of EQUAL, which feels like the obvious answer. But that’s the trap. The clue is really pointing to a sports context, where 1–1 is how you describe the score of a game. The “for one” part is the hint that you’re looking for a specific example, not a general idea. Once I realized the crossings don't match i came back to it and SCORE made perfect sense and fit right in with the puzzle’s sports theme.

Now that you've cracked the 4A 1-1, for one clue, you're one step closer to completing today’s Mini Puzzle! If you're still stuck on other clues, don't worry—we've got you covered. Today’s NYT Mini Highlights

Today’s Wednesday Mini by Joel Fagliano felt very easy to me, with a clear sports vibe running through it. Most of the grid went down almost instantly, definitely one of those puzzles you can breeze through without much resistance.
The only moment that tripped me up a bit was “1–1, for one.” I initially went with EQUAL, which felt right in a general sense, but the crossings quickly proved otherwise. Once I switched to SCORE, everything clicked into place and the rest fell smoothly.
Aside from that small detour, the clues were super straightforward, and the sports theme made it feel cohesive and light. Not much head-scratching required today, but still a satisfying quick solve.
