"Yeah, obviously!" - NYT The Mini Clue

Across

  • The clue "Dressed for bed, informally" suggests casual or shorthand language for nightwear. "PJs" is a common informal term for pajamas. Adding "IN" implies being dressed in them. Together, "INPJS" perfectly captures the informal phrasing for being dressed for bed.

  • The clue "___ swing (outdoor seating)" points to a specific type of swing commonly found outdoors. A "porch swing" is a bench-like seat suspended from a porch ceiling, fitting the clue perfectly. The blank indicates the missing location ("porch") where such a swing is typically installed.

  • The clue "Love a lot" directly translates to a deep affection or admiration, synonymous with "adore." To "adore" someone or something means to love them deeply or passionately, fitting the clue perfectly in both tone and definition.

  • The answer is DUNES because beach signs often warn people to "Keep Off Dunes" to protect the fragile ecosystems formed by these sandy mounds. This phrase commonly appears on such signs, making it a logical fit for the clue.

  • The word "HEW" means to cut or chop something, especially wood or trees, with a tool like an axe. The clue directly refers to chopping down a tree, making HEW an appropriate verb that fits both the meaning and length of the crossword answer.

Down

  • The answer is IPAD because it’s an Apple device widely used in retail environments as a cash register when paired with point-of-sale apps. Its portability, touchscreen interface, and compatibility with payment systems make it ideal for processing transactions.

  • The clue "Yeah, obviously!" suggests an informal, dismissive response indicating something is self-evident. "NODUH" is a colloquial expression used sarcastically to mean "of course" or "obviously," fitting the tone and context perfectly. The casual phrasing matches the playful nature of the clue.

  • The word "PRONE" means lying flat, specifically with the front of the body facing downward. This directly matches the clue "Lying face down," making it the correct and literal solution. The term is often used in anatomy or physical positions.

  • The answer "JCREW" fits because J.Crew is a direct competitor in the retail apparel market with Abercrombie & Fitch. Both brands are known for offering casual, preppy clothing and accessories, appealing to similar demographics, making "JCREW" a logical solution to this clue.

  • The answer "SHES" completes the lyric "She's a Bad Mama Jama," the title of the 1981 R&B hit by Carl Carlton. The possessive "She's" refers to the subject described in the song, making it a perfect fit for the clue.

"Yeah, obviously!" Answer Explained

The answer is NODUH.

This one tripped me up more than it should have. The clue clearly points to a casual, slightly sarcastic response, something you’d say when the answer is painfully obvious. My first instinct went to phrases like “I know,” “duh,” or even “tell me about it,” but none of those quite fit the grid. Once I had a couple of crossing letters in place, NODUH started to emerge, and then it clicked. It’s essentially a phonetic spelling of “no, duh,” which carries that same eye-roll tone. It’s the kind of entry that feels obvious in hindsight but is easy to overlook because you’re thinking of more standard phrases first.

Today’s NYT Mini Highlights

I just wrapped up today's Mini by JOel Fagliano, and it was both fun and satisfying! INPJS gave me a nice foothold to start, and for a moment I thought this one was going to be a breeze since the across clues fell into place pretty quickly after that. But the downs slowed me down more than I expected. I blanked a bit on “NODUH” for “Yeah, obviously!” and “PRONE” for “lying face down” didn’t come to me right away either. Luckily, the crossings helped me work them out. Overall, a smooth but not entirely effortless Sunday Mini; just enough resistance to keep it interesting.
