NYT’s The Mini Crossword Answers and Hints

Across

  • The clue "Displays at a trailhead" refers to information often posted at the start of a hiking trail. Trailheads typically feature maps to guide hikers, showing routes, landmarks, and trail difficulty. "Displays" indicates these visual guides, making MAPS the fitting answer.

  • The answer "JAMES" refers to Jim, the enslaved character in Mark Twain's "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." Reimagining his story with depth, the novel uses the formal name "James" as his perspective is central. "James" highlights his narrative's elevation in this Pulitzer-winning 2024 reinterpretation.

  • The answer "ALIEN" fits because in sci-fi movies, an "invader" often refers to extraterrestrial beings or creatures from another planet—commonly called "aliens." This matches the concept of something foreign or non-native, often central to sci-fi invasion storylines.

  • The answer "WISPS" fits because it refers to thin, delicate strands or streaks, such as wisps of hair, smoke, or mist. The clue "Thin strands" directly describes the fine and fragile nature of something like wisps, making it a precise match.

  • The clue "'Tude" is a casual shorthand for "attitude," specifically a bold or disrespectful one. "SASS" aligns perfectly, as it means cheeky or impudent talk, often associated with having an attitude. The informal tone of the clue matches the informal slang nature of the answer.

Down

  • Michelle Obama, the former First Lady of the United States, has two daughters: Malia and Sasha. The clue asks for one of them, and the answer is MALIA. This is straightforward trivia, and Malia Obama is well-known due to her public role as part of the Obama family.

  • The phrase "A little out of whack" means something is slightly wrong or not quite right. "AMISS" perfectly fits this definition, as it describes something being off, incorrect, or not as it should be, aligning with the clue's meaning.

  • The answer is PEEPS because these are festive marshmallow candies, often shaped like chicks or bunnies, that are popular treats during Easter. The clue directly refers to their association with Easter baskets, linking the seasonal treat to the holiday symbolically.

  • The clue "I.R.S. IDs" refers to identifiers used by the Internal Revenue Service. SSNS (Social Security Numbers) are unique numbers used by the I.R.S. to track individuals for tax purposes, making them the correct solution. The plural "IDs" matches the plural answer, SSNS.

  • The answer is JAWS because it is the iconic 1975 film directed by Steven Spielberg that features a massive 25-foot animatronic great white shark as its central element. The shark terrorizes a small beach town, making JAWS a defining thriller and one of the first summer blockbusters.

A few clues rely on precise vocabulary or slightly vague phrasing that might trip up casual solvers. It’s a clean grid, but not the breeziest solve; definitely a good test of both current events awareness and crossword experience.
